How Do I Love Thee?

Elizabeth Barrett Browning’s much-loved sonnet is set here for three part female chorus with piano accompaniment. The harmonies are very much inspired by French impressionism with sumptuous 9th chords and the gentle shifts from major to minor. Secondary school and adult choirs have enjoyed performing this piece since it was composed in 1994, and it has become a favourite piece for wedding ceremonies. Optional string quartet accompaniment is also available upon request. Arranged for SATB, as well.

"The ladies were of course taken with the text, but once they began with the music and the beautiful marrying of lyrics and harmony, they were completely sold.  They especially love the “eja” section, enjoying the “tangibility” of the parts and how they work together and unfold into the words “I Love Thee….” in their words, “just breathtaking!" timuser
